The first settlement on the site of the modern city was founded on December 4, 1786, as a mission of the Spanish Franciscans and was named in honor of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara.

Santa Barbara is located approximately 140 kilometers northwest of Los Angeles on the Pacific Ocean. From the northeast, the city is surrounded by a mountain range, some peaks of which exceed a height of 1000 meters above sea level, protecting the settlement from continental winds.
